‘Another Hidden Tax’: Australia’s New Passport

Must Read

Aussie travellers will get a new passport this year after the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) launched the ‘R Series’ passport. According to DFAT, the new passport is much more secure than the previous P Series, which was issued in 2014.

“The Australian passport is regularly upgraded to protect passport holders’ identity and personal information in line with international best practice,” DFAT said.

“The R Series includes advanced security features to prevent counterfeiting and identity theft, and ultimately, keep Australians safe.”

Aussies will now benefit from a passport photo page of tough, high-security plastic. The DFAT has worked tirelessly to implement additional layers of security with the new R Series passport, making it harder for counterfeiters and identity thieves.

The R Series passport incorporates artwork by Indigenous artists on the inside cover and includes visa pages that feature iconic Australian landscapes.

The enhanced security features in the new R Series passports have been implemented in line with international best practices. They are designed to protect Australians from potential fraud or identity theft when travelling abroad.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade announced that the new R Series passport would cost the same as the previous P Series passport. Both adults over 16 years of age and children under 16 can apply for a new passport with a fee of $325 and $164, respectively.

Aussie travellers needing a new passport will face an additional cost if they are in a hurry to get one. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has announced that priority processing for the new R Series passport will cost an extra $237.

It is important to note that those who lose their passports while overseas may be required to pay an additional $146 when applying for an emergency replacement.

It remains to be seen how successful the new R Series passport will be. Still, many Aussies hope it will provide them with greater security while travelling abroad without having too significant an impact on their wallets.
