Australia’s Oldest Coal Power Plant Shut Down in Green Energy Push

Australia’s commitment to a cleaner future has taken a significant step forward as the country’s oldest coal-fired power plant, the Liddell power station, has ceased operations.

In a statement released on April 28, Liddell’s owner, AGL, announced that it would take approximately two years to demolish the plant, freeing up the site for new clean energy projects. The site’s redevelopment will include a hydrogen power plant, significantly contributing to Australia’s clean energy goals.

“More than 90% of the materials in the power station will be recycled, including 70,000 tonnes of steel – which is more steel than in the Sydney Harbour Bridge,” the company said.

The shutdown of the three-hour drive north of the Sydney-based plant marks a significant milestone in Australia’s energy transition as the country seeks to reduce its carbon emissions and embrace renewable energy.

According to Mark Diesendorf, a University of New South Wales renewable energy expert, coal-fired power plants such as Liddell must be more reliable and efficient.

The continued use of these plants will make it almost impossible for Australia to achieve its climate targets. Despite being one of the world’s largest coal producers and exporters, the centre-left Labor Party has committed to sourcing 82% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

The report found that record levels of renewable electricity, primarily solar power, were already reducing emissions and household power prices.

Climate finance expert Tim Buckley told AFP that Australia has the potential to become a renewable energy superpower thanks to its abundant sunshine and sparsely-populated windswept coasts.

“Every bloody week, there’s a new battery announced, a new wind farm, or other major projects proceeding,” Buckley said.

The closure of Liddell and its redevelopment for clean energy projects indicate that Australia is taking significant steps towards reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning to a more sustainable and cleaner energy future.
