Meta Faces Employee Dissatisfaction and Low Morale Amidst Leadership Concerns

Another wave of negative news has hit Meta and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, as internal surveys reveal growing employee discontent.

A recent report based on a survey conducted between April and May disclosed that only 26% of Meta employees expressed confidence in the company’s leadership. This marked a decline of five percentage points from October 2022. Additionally, the survey indicated that only 43% of respondents felt valued, a significant drop from 58% in the previous survey.

Over the past months, Meta has undergone layoffs, spending cuts, and strategic shifts to enhance efficiency, causing employee anxiety about job security and the possibility of more layoffs.

“They’re constantly wondering, ‘Is there another round coming? Am I next?'” Kerry Sulkowicz, a corporate advisor and managing principal of the Boswell Group, said.

In November last year, Meta announced a reduction of 11,000 jobs, representing around 13% of its workforce. Subsequently, the company implemented a second round of cuts affecting 10,000 employees in March. The remaining staff now face increased workloads and adjustments to new management.

While Meta has emphasised its focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and downplayed rumours of a shift away from the Metaverse, doubts regarding Zuckerberg’s leadership have emerged. The company’s spokesperson has maintained that they remain committed to AI and the Metaverse, but reports suggest that the company has scaled back its Metaverse ambitions.

Despite the internal challenges, Meta’s stock has experienced a rise of 112% year-to-date. Advertisers are increasingly drawn to the platform’s AI marketing tools, indicating some success in Meta’s AI investments.

“We’ve been focusing on both AI and the metaverse for years now, and we will continue to focus on both,” Zuckerberg said.

As Meta grapples with employee dissatisfaction and concerns over its leadership, the company faces the daunting task of regaining employee trust and addressing the prevailing negative sentiment within its ranks.
