Nexus Airlines Launches to Serve Western Australia’s Remote Outback Regions

Nexus Airlines, a newcomer in Western Australia, is set to bring much-needed air services to remote areas in the outback. The recently launched airline will operate under the guidance of regional carrier Aviair (GD).

To support the establishment and sustainability of the new services, the state of Western Australia, along with local governments and the airports of Broome and Port Hedland, has provided over AU $8 million ($5.3 million) in financial aid.

Clare Smith, CEO of the East Kimberley Chamber of Commerce and Industry, expressed the positive impact the airline will have on the region, particularly by offering more convenient flights from the Kimberley region to Darwin.

“There have been limitations with having only one airline operating on that [Broome-Kununurra-Darwin] route, and prices have increased for various reasons. The reliability has been patchy over the past few years. It’s pretty limiting having flights in and out of Kununurra every second day.” Smith said.

This will eliminate the need for red-eye services and provide a cost-effective alternative for travellers connecting to the east coast. Nexus Airlines is advertising airfares starting at AU $199 ($132), a significant relief for isolated locals who have sometimes been faced with fares exceeding AU $500 ($332) on current operations by Qantas.

Michael McConachy, a local tourism magnate and part-owner of HM Consolidated Group, which includes Nexus Airlines’ parent company Aviair, recognizes that the arrival of a new carrier in the region is long overdue. He sees Nexus Airlines as filling a gap in the market and meeting the demand for reliable air travel services.

“This is a remarkable outcome where the state government, four local governments, two private airports, and a regional airline have all supported the new and expanded IRFN,” McConachy said.

The launch of Nexus Airlines brings hope and improved connectivity to remote areas in Western Australia.
