Qantas Orders 24 Widebody Aircraft, Prioritising Sustainability and Modernisation for the Future

Qantas Airways, Australia’s flagship carrier, has made a significant stride towards reducing its carbon footprint and modernising its fleet with a substantial order for 24 widebody aircraft.

The multi-billion-dollar order is evenly split between two industry giants, Airbus and Boeing, with 12 Airbus A350s and 12 Boeing 787s set to join Qantas’ fleet starting from fiscal 2027 and continuing into the next decade.

“Qantas clearly believes that demand will continue, ordering 24 new planes to meet demand and saying demand will remain above pre-COVID levels,” said Josh Gilbert, market analyst at eToro AUS Capital.

One of the most notable aspects of this deal is Qantas’ commitment to sustainability. As part of the agreements, the airline will gain access to an impressive 500 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually, with deliveries set to commence in 2028. This significant commitment to SAF has the potential to fulfil up to 90% of the company’s interim SAF target for 2030.

In a world where airlines are increasingly pressured to reduce emissions, Qantas is taking a proactive approach. SAF can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80%, aligning perfectly with Qantas’ emissions reduction plan.

Market analysts see this as a sign of Qantas’ confidence in sustained high demand for air travel, reflected in the airline’s record profit announcement, driving a 1.9% share surge during early trading.

With incoming CEO Vanessa Hudson set to take the helm in November, this substantial aircraft order signifies a promising new era for Australia’s flag carrier.

“Both the 787-9 and 787-10 offer enhanced efficiency, flexibility and passenger comfort to connect Australia and destinations worldwide,” said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

With the promise of eco-friendly fuel and a bullish outlook on post-pandemic demand, Qantas paves the way for a promising new era in Australian air travel.
