Wendy’s Fast Food Opening Stores in Australia

American fast food giant Wendy’s makes the trip across the seas to reopen restaurants in Australia.

Founder Dave Thomas opened its first restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969. The chain now has more than 7,000 restaurants globally.

Wendy’s first attempted to establish its presence in the Australian market in the early eighties but eventually pulled out due to poor sales because 99% of Australians had never heard of the restaurant.

Enlisting the aid of Australian franchise consulting firm DC Strategy, Wendy’s is determined to penetrate the market Down Under as part of its strategy to accelerate global growth. The chain is confident that it will succeed this time.

CEO Todd Penegor states they are excited to bring their great-tasting hamburgers to Australia. “We know Australians love hamburgers, and we can’t wait to give them a taste of Wendy’s,” he adds.

The fast food chain is famous for its signature Dave’s Single cheeseburger consisting of a quarter-pound square beef patty, as well as its offerings of nuggets, fries, shakes and its esoteric breakfast offering, the Pretzel Bacon Pub Cheeseburger.

But retail analyst Steve Kulmar thinks otherwise. Kulmar feels that Wendy’s is testing the Oz market at this time as it would only be opening ten stores and predicts they will face a significant challenge in winning the market. “They’ll be going up against MacDonald’s and Hungry Jack’s”, Kulmar notes.

Wendy’s will have to work double time to succeed as it will also be up against other established US chains. Five Guys, Mark Wahlberg’s Wahlburgers, Taco Bell and Carl’s Jr., have already established a solid customer base in the market, which predicts success for the company to remain vague for now.

The locations of the stores to be opened in a year or two are still undisclosed. DC Strategy is still working on advertising the ten franchise opportunities and has not confirmed if there are already takers.

The franchising firm sets the franchise fee to open a Wendy’s restaurant at AUD 1 million.
