What’s Behind Billionaire Bruce Gordon’s Plan To Tap Into The Pub Boom In Scarborough?

Must Read

Bruce Gordon, a savvy entrepreneur and resident of Scarborough, is looking to tap into the booming pub culture in the area with an innovative plan for success.

WIN Corporation, owned by billionaire Bruce Gordon, sells the Scarborough Hotel, a well-known establishment in Illawarra. This is the first time in 40 years that the pub has been put up for sale.

Gordon aims to take advantage of the thriving pub trading market.

The pub, located on prime oceanfront land, has been owned by WIN since 1983 and is a heritage-listed building. It is situated just south of the famous Sea Cliff Bridge and operates as a licensed venue through a lease agreement.

“We believe that a new owner could bring in novel concepts to enhance the site’s appeal and explore its potential opportunities,” says WIN’s Andrew Lancaster.

“It is the right time to list the Scarborough Hotel for sale since it has major potential and only two years left on the lease,” he said.

Mr Gordon owns WIN, a regional TV station, and the local rugby league team, St George Illawarra Dragons.

The Rich Lister, who is 94 years old, is actively involved in the property market in the south coast region of NSW. Recently, he received approval for a $400 million redevelopment project in Wollongong, which has caused discontent among some nearby residents due to obstructing their beach views.

Simon Kersten, the selling agent and managing director at Colliers Wollongong, refused to reveal a price estimate.

“Since we have only been live for 24 hours, buyers have not yet indicated. The uniqueness of the asset makes it difficult to determine its market value, and our sales process will provide us with valuable insights,” he said.

The Illawarra offer responds to the surge in pub transactions nationwide. This asset class has become more popular as people value socialising more after the pandemic lockdowns.
